Typical
Week Guided Walking Holiday Itinerary
|
- Arrive
on Thursday, unpack and settle in to your room at the hotel,
maybe take a swim in the pool to refresh yourselves from the
journey, before joining us for dinner in the hotel restaurant
overlooking the Ionian Sea.
- After
a leisurely breakfast on Friday we all head off to explore
the local countryside and the typically Zakynthian village
of Ano Gerakari with panoramic views across the island. Here
we might enjoy a light lunch before returning to the hotel
in good time to relax and even take an evening stroll before
dinner.
- Saturday
takes us to Zante Town starting at the Cathedral with it's
magnificent gold icons and decorations, we then walk across
the harbour to Solomos Square then through the town and up
towards the castle. Much of Zante Town was destroyed in the
earthquake of 1953 and so the ruins we see have special significance
as it is believed the Zakynthian Acropolis once stood here.
Up at the castle there are fantastic views and interesting
buildings including ruins of the old churches and military
buildings that occupied the castle over hundreds of years.
We stop for a late lunch at Bohali before making the descent
back down to the harbour.
- Sunday
we walk out a little further along tracks and country lanes
to Kipseli and then on to Tragaki. The villagers of Tragaki
are almost embarrassingly kind people who have really taken
to those who make the effort to come up to their village.
We stop for lunch and perhaps pop into the Cafenion to enjoy
a Greek coffee or Frappe.
- Monday
begins with a drive to the high northern town of Volimes where
we walk across tracks to discover the ruined monastery of
St Andreas which stands high on the north west coast. Walking
back to Volimes we follow ancient trails that are alive with
wildlife and you may be lucky enough to spot praying mantis.
We conclude with a walk around the town of Volimes with its
majestic Venetian tower and church and perhaps stop to try
some of the local mountain honey that the villages make.
- Tuesday
is a chance to get up high, with a slow walk up the mountain
which offers views across the whole of the eastern side of
the island and beyond to the mainland and island of Cephalonia.
On the top is the ancient village of Geri which has a tiny
traditional taverna which offers only a few traditional dishes
cooked daily like rabbit stew and stifado.
- After
breakfast on Wednesday we drive to the southern tip of the
island to walk across the Keri peninsula up into the hills
with breath taking views of Laganas bay as we descend to Marathia
with it's crystal clear waters. Then on to Keri Lake famous
for naturally occurring pitch springs before returning to
Keri village.
- Thursday
is time to depart and we take you to the airport for you return
flight home - Goodbye and hope to see you soon.
